In the animal kingdom, it’s not uncommon to see animals take action against other animals that have mistreated them. In fact, the response of animals when they are hurt by others is often astonishing and shows a strong sense of justice. For example, when a bird is attacked by another bird, it will often attack back. A study in the journal “Animal Behaviour” found that 58% of birds attacked by conspecifics were subsequently killed by their attackers.
Interestingly, the rate was only 35% among birds that were attacked by predators. It seems that such attacks against conspecifics were more than just random acts of violence; the birds appeared to be seeking just retribution for past transgressions.
